Protected areas in Georgia have more than 100-year history. The first protected area – Lagodekhi Strict Nature Reserve was created in 1912.
Over the years, the size and number of Protected Areas increased.
Today, there are 88 Protected Areas and their total area is 596 156 ha, which is 8.57 % of the country’s territory.
